June to November is whale season - the coming of the whales, not only creates a stir, but brings to our shores a large, intelligent and remarkable giant of the sea and the only mammal to have adapted to life in the open oceans. Whales, including the Southern Right Whale and the Humpback whale, are frequently sited along the Cape Overberg coast. These gentle giants spend summer feeding around Antartica and then migrate thousands of miles to the sheltered bays, to mate and calf. The best and most well known whale watching area in South Africa, and even the world, is the Southern Cape shores, in particular the Hermanus area where you can observe them from the cliffs as close as you can throw a stone!
To get even closer, you can go on a registered whale watching boat. The number of legal boat-based permits is limited, so booking in advance is required. South Africa&'s coast is divided into sections for whale watching, and each section has only one permit holder for boat cruises. Boats are also not allowed anywhere near cow-calf pairs. If this does happen accidentally, guides know to leave the area straight away at a constant slow, no wake, speed, so that as little intrusion as possible occurs.
Late September sees the arrival of the whales celebrated with the event-filled annual Whale Festival. The whale numbers peak in October so if you are planning something different and exciting this is the month.
We collect you early morning and drive via Sir Lowry's Pass to Hermanus and/or Gansbaai. Depending if you are wanting to go on the optional boat trip we will spend the day in the area of Walker Bay watching and observing these beautiful gentle giants of the ocean.
We have lunch in Hermanus and return via the scenic winding coastal drive of Betty`s Bay and Gordan`s Bay.
Options for the day include:
- Hermanus town centre to spot whales and Rotary Way - amazing views from 350m above sea-level
- Danger Point Lighthouse
